Faith Academy boys basketball hosts own tourney Dec. 16-17

The Faith Academy of Marble Falls boys basketball team begins play in its own tournament at 9 a.m. Friday, Dec. 16, the first of two contests that day.
The Flames start pool play against Bulverde Bracken at 9 a.m. and TMI Episcopal at 6 p.m., both on Friday, and return to the court against Austin Veritas at noon on Saturday. Their pool record determines who and what time they play a fourth contest on Saturday.
Also playing in the tournament is Smoking For Jesus, which takes the court at 1:30 and 4:30 p.m. Friday and at 1:30 p.m. Saturday. Other teams include Austin Achieve and San Marcos Homeschool and all are guaranteed four games in two days. The tournament championship is at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
Faith head coach Zakk Revelle said he is looking for one main trait during the tournament.
“I know it sounds cliche,” he said, “We want to continue to grow together as a group. We want to continue to try out different groups together.”
He noted some Flames have been battling illness during the week, so he’s uncertain who will be available to play.
“We’ll have new starters who’ll play heavy minutes to see what we have,” the coach said. “The No. 1 thing is to get everybody back when we hit district play. If we’re all 100 percent when we hit district play, we’ll be tough to beat out.”
The Flames are entering this contest on the heels of a 53-41 loss to Yavneh Academy of Dallas Dec. 10.
“I thought we played well,” Revelle said. “It was a 24-22 game at the half.”
He noted Yavneh is known for its third quarters where it outscored the Flames 19-7 to build a 43-29 advantage headed into the final stanza. Faith trailed 17-14 after the opening quarter and outscored the opponent 8-7 in the second and 12-10 in the fourth.
“Yavneh is famous across TAPPS hoops for their third quarters,” the coach said. “They’re famous for adjusting and playing well.”
The Bulldogs hit a 3-pointer to turn a four-point game into a seven-point lead then added another 3-pointer and a lay-up from a turnover for a double-digit separation.
The Flames participated in some activities with the Yavneh team before the game began.
“It was a really good experience for the team,” Revelle said. “The kids got to hang out with each other. It was a really good experience, it was a tough place to play. Basketball and soccer are the only two sports they have. To us, it was a win-win.”
